York University, Faculty of Environmental Studies

York University, Faculty of Environmental Studies web siteDerek worked on this site as an employee of York (Coordinator of Web Development for the Faculty of Environmental Studies).

While he didn't design the initial version of the site, he added several new sections and made many upgrades to the code and layout in his two years of employment there. Particular attention was paid to search engine optimization - he moved their google placement up several pages, to the 3rd position for key searches.

Ontario EcoSchools

Ontario EcoSchoolsOntario EcoSchools, was initially supported and created through the Faculty of Environmental Studies at York, in collaboration with various school boards. Derek set up EcoSchools on the FES web site initially and later moved it to it's own space. The site has grown steadily in use and has provided curriculum guidelines to numerous teachers in York Region and the GTA.

ZOX Technologies Inc.

ZOX Technologies Inc., Web DesignsWeb Designs for ZOX Technologies Inc., June-Dec.2000   Derek was on contract to ZOX as their senior graphic designer in 2000 (right before the tech-bubble burst). He ran through several web designs, marketing campaigns and branding initiatives, primarily focussed on recruitment, before the aforementioned bubble did it's thing.

Environmental Defense Fund: "Save Boyd Park" site

Save Boyd Park Derek was hired to provide design and technical upgrades as well as postings for this grassroots web site by the Friends of Boyd Park and the Environmental Defense fund.

Derek's work to ensure cross-browser compatibility and up-to-date news helped the Friends of Boyd Park reach their goal of protecting the land from some very careless and greedy developers.

Web Plant

ZOX Technologies Inc., Web Designs Derek got started in web work at Web Plant where he was doing graphics and later flash animation. He picked up html as the curiosity took hold.   This sample was a site that Web Plant created using his graphics, modelled after the video casette design for the first 'interactive' mystery DVD.

Video Game Graphics Derek designed the characters and level backgrounds for this cell-phone video game (released July 2006) using photoshop and tilestudio. Abundance with Ease

Abundance With Ease, Cover artDerek was asked to create a folk-art style graphic for the cover a new self help book called Abundance With Ease. The web site seems to have since gone down but the book is still for sale. The book's three authors were thrilled with the results of his illustrative work.

Undercurrents, Vol.10 "Other Ways of Telling"

Undercurrents Journal v.10, Cover artIn addition to contributing some interior illustrations, Derek was asked to create the cover to the respected environmental journal Undercurrents. The piece is a vandyke print with pencil crayon illustration, highlighting his interest in photographic and illustrative techniques.


KidTime Magazine: 3 Issues, 15 Illustrations

KidTime Magazine, Interior artKidTime was a magazine out of San Diego that offered a subscription service for schools and parents. The books were filled with fiction and non-fiction, as well as puzzles and fun facts. Derek was called in to quickly save two stories in the pilot issue when their first artist couldn't handle the workload - his hard work raised the invitation to contribute two the next 2 issues.

Chartattack

Illustration of Busta Rhymes and friends Derek created this graphic for a chartattack.com article discussing the rapper Busta Rhymes. Suffice to say, it was a lot of fun. The original piece is no longer intact online, hence the screen capture.



W.ork I.n P.rogress - Comic Anthology

Comic Cover: W.I.P. - Work in ProgressCover design and illustrations for a collaborative comic called "W.I.P. - Work in Progress". 3 stories in one - done with local Toronto artists to highlight their works in progress for an upcoming comicon (Derek contributed one story 'Kasbah', written by Derek Chezzi, colors by Dan Scott).

ZOX Technologies Inc.

The ZOX Squad The ZOX Squad was the first branding and marketing initiative Derek helped develop in the Communications dept. The Squad was to be an elite trio of heroic individuals from all walks of life who had united to battle the power hungry "Hack" and his evil robot empire called "Crushthepeople.com". The ZOX Squad wanted to free the web for all humanity.

Print Ads

ZOX Technologies Inc.

ZOX Technologies Inc., Print AdsZOX Technologies was constantly recruiting programmers and developers and needed some 'fresh' newspaper ads to get the attention of type of employee they were seeking: someone competitive, imaginative, and driven. These are some samples they came up with in the communications team (all designs were Derek's - the concepts were collaborative).

This campaign resulted in many top-line hires.

Corporate Portraits: ZOX execsDespite their hand-drawn appearance these portraits of the ZOX executives were done in a few days using a tablet and photos. Derek can offer this service for much less than your average portrait artist because of this technique.

Desk Name-plate: Manga-style/Graffiti Portrait

Manga-style/Graffiti PortraitA In 2003 Derek was commissioned by a lawyer who wanted to have a name-plate for her desk that was 'unusual': a manga-style portrait with a graffiti-style backdrop was the final product.

James Norton: Bio-page Banner

James Norton, Bio-page BannerJim Norton is co-creator of Flak Magazine and a prolific political writer (recently completing his 2nd book "Saving General Washington"). He commissioned Derek to create a portrait-banner for his biographical website (www.flakmag.com/jim/).

Resolute Pictures Inc.

Independant film company Resolute Pictures Inc. has commissioned several logos, video jacket designs, and postcards. They can all be seen at the Resolute Pictures Inc. site. Derek has had a long-standing professional relationship with Resolute Pictures Inc., helping define packaging and branding initiatives over the years.

Cobworks.ca

Gaming company Cobworks.ca commissioned a logo, to be used on their site and business materials. Derek also created all the graphics for their first cell-phone video game Calypso in 2006.

Brazil Communications Flash Promos In early 2007 Derek worked with Brazil Communications to create flash banners based on their creative direction. These have been part of an ongoing and successful campaign utilizing stick figures to create mini-movies.

Chart Magazine

Illustration of Busta Rhymes and friends Chart Magazine used a cartoon Derek made of a classic Big Wheel tricycle on their "Big Wheelz '98" CD and also produced it as a sticker for advertising.
